Precautions for Clinical Use of Dental Low-Speed Contra

  • Standardized Clinical Operation Specifications for Low-Speed Contra Handpieces

① Standard Operating Pressure Control

Dental low-speed contra-angle handpieces complete cutting and grinding work through the rotating cutting edge of burs. Continuous heavy pressure is strictly forbidden during clinical operation. Excessive operating pressure will overload the internal gear and bearing system, resulting in gear tooth breakage, permanent bearing wear, and premature handpiece failure. Clinically, adopt light contact and progressive grinding, relying on the stable rotation of the handpiece to complete treatment operations.

② Scientific Rotation Operation Rules

Avoid long-term continuous full-load operation of the low-speed dental handpiece. Intermittent shutdown and heat dissipation are required during high-intensity continuous treatment to reduce thermal loss of internal precision parts. Frequent and rapid start-stop operations should be avoided to reduce impact damage to the handpiece transmission structure.

Prohibition of Non-Standard Application Scenarios

Low-speed contra-angle handpieces can only be used for standard oral clinical operations within the design scope. It is forbidden to grind hard metal materials or excessively polish and trim fixed restorations. Only standard dental burs and professional grinding heads can be clamped; all non-standard tools are prohibited. Operators shall control the working range of rotating burs to prevent accidental scratching and laceration of patients' oral mucosa and soft tissues.

④ Clinical Infection Control and Personal Protection

Where clinically applicable, use rubber dams for isolated treatment. Dental operators must wear safety goggles and protective face shields, and cooperate with high-volume oral suction equipment to reduce aerosol diffusion. Standard protective procedures must be implemented to control cross-infection risks in dental clinics.

 

  • Post-Treatment Cleaning, Disinfection and Maintenance of Dental Handpieces

Important Industry Reminder: All cleaning, disinfection and sterilization operations must comply with WS 310 Central Sterile Supply Department Standards and international dental instrument disinfection specifications, and adapt to the autoclave sterilization requirements of different low-speed contra-angle handpiece models.

① Timely Preliminary Cleaning

Immediately remove the bur after each clinical treatment, and thoroughly wipe off residual tooth debris, dental cement, blood stains, saliva and other contaminants on the handpiece head and body with soft non-woven wipes and neutral medical detergent. Do not immerse the entire low-speed handpiece in unapproved disinfectant solution. Corrosive disinfectants will erode internal bearings, sealing rings and precision components, affecting handpiece performance and service life.

② Cooling Water Channel Dredging

Flush the handpiece cooling water channels with clean water to remove residual debris and prevent nozzle blockage caused by dried dirt. Do not use sharp hard tools such as steel wires to dredge the water channel, so as to avoid puncturing the internal thin water delivery pipeline and damaging the cooling system.

③ Professional Lubrication Maintenance (Core Step)

For high-temperature sterilizable dental low-speed contra-angle handpieces, perform professional lubrication after cleaning and complete drying. Use only manufacturer-specified dedicated dental handpiece lubricating oil, inject oil into the standard oil filling port of the handpiece head, and run the handpiece without load for a short time to make the lubricant fully infiltrate the internal gears and bearings. Finally, wipe off excess surface oil stains.

⚠️ Key Note: Handpiece lubrication must be completed before pressure steam sterilization. Secondary oil filling after sterilization is not allowed in standard clinical operation.

④ Standard Sterilization Specifications

Confirm the high-temperature resistance and sterilization mode of the low-speed contra-angle handpiece. Standard pressure steam sterilization is the preferred sterilization method for most dental low-speed handpieces. Dry heat sterilization and chemical immersion sterilization are prohibited unless specially approved by the handpiece manufacturer. Place handpieces gently during sterilization loading to avoid extrusion and impact damage. Ensure thorough drying after sterilization; do not store handpieces with condensed water in sealed containers.

 

  • Standardized Storage, Transportation and Daily Management

After sterilization, cooling and complete drying, store dental low-speed contra-angle handpieces in a clean, dry and dust-free medical storage area, avoiding mutual collision and extrusion of handpiece heads.

Use special dedicated medical instrument boxes for handpiece transportation. Bare handpiece transportation is forbidden to prevent structural damage and gear deformation caused by external impact.

Implement classified management of dental instruments. Faulty low-speed handpieces shall be independently labeled with "FAULTY, PENDING REPAIR" and isolated from normal clinical available instruments to avoid misuse.

 

  • Prohibited Operations and Fault Handling Guidelines

Stop using the low-speed contra-angle handpiece immediately and contact professional after-sales maintenance service once the following faults occur: abnormal operating noise, persistent severe vibration, insufficient bur clamping force, continuous water leakage of cooling system, and handpiece head rotation jamming. Clinical staff are not allowed to disassemble the handpiece privately. Unauthorized disassembly will damage precision matching structures, void product warranty, and destroy the sealing performance required for sterilization.

Do not use mismatched motors and connectors of different brands. Mismatched power output will cause severe wear and rapid damage to the internal precision components of low-speed handpieces.

For long-term idle dental low-speed handpieces, conduct regular cleaning, professional lubrication and short no-load operation every month to prevent internal parts from rusting, aging and seizing.
