Preliminary exploration: Use a hand file (such as C-type pioneer file, K-file, H-file) to explore the root canal orifice and initially determine the length, curvature, and calcification of the canal. Gradual exploration has the effect of expanding the root canal, reducing resistance for subsequent files entering the canal, and increasing clinical safety.

Establish a straight channel: When the root canal is confirmed to be unobstructed, use rotary nickel-titanium files (rotation speed 400, torque 3.5) to create a straight channel, opening the upper third of the canal no more than two-thirds.

Precise working length: Use a measuring file (rotation speed 300, torque 1.5) to determine the precise working length.

Cutting: Select an appropriate Gates-Glidden drill or root canal file based on the canal's condition to perform rotary cutting or up and down pulling operations. The rotary nickel-titanium files have strong cutting ability and can deeply penetrate, creating a smooth canal wall. The files are primarily used to remove dentin and calcification from the root canal wall.

Use alternately: For straight and wide canals, use Gates-Glidden drills first before using files. For curved canals, use files first, and then alternate between files and Gates-Glidden drills.

Pay attention to operating skills: The cross-section of the working portion of the K-file is typically triangular or square and is primarily used to remove dentin and calcification from the root canal wall. Use lifting and rotating motions during use. The cross-section of the working portion of the H-file is typically comma-shaped, with a sharp blade and strong cutting ability, but has poor bending resistance. It is suitable for removing large amounts of dentin in straight canals.

Maintenance: Pay attention to the wear of the file during use and replace it when the file becomes worn or broken to avoid any negative impact on using the file.
